The City

Ciudad Real is a small city with a population of about 70,000. It is situated in the centre of Spain, in the region of Castilla La Mancha and is the capital of the province also named Ciudad Real. The high speed train takes you to Madrid in just 50 minutes, to Cordoba in one hour and to Seville in one hour and 45 minutes.

The University of Castilla La Mancha is based here in Ciudad Real and, thus, the city has quite a large young population bringing a lively and dynamic vibe. Every year, many international students come on Erasmus programmes from all over Europe.

Ciudad Real has a vibrant nightlife with many bars, pubs and discos. The city prides itself on its cuisine with hundreds of “tapas” bars providing free snacks for the customers to enjoy with their beer or locally produced wine. A multi-screen cinema, several theatres and several sports centres provide added entertainment

The surrounding countryside is occupied mostly by vineyards and olive groves, as well as large hunting farms. There are many routes for walking, cycling, trekking etc. in this beautiful land. The villages are quaint and beautiful in the Manchegan style. The most famous villages of the area are Almagro (which boasts the oldest theatre in Europe, dating from the XV Century) and Valdepeñas which is the biggest producer and exporter of fine wines in Western Europe.

Apart from wine, other products for which this region is famous are Olive Oil and Manchegan Cheese.

The many festivals throughout the year include The Cinema Festival (January), Carnival (February), Easter (March-April), Pandorga (July), the International Theatre Festival of Almagro (July), and the Tapas festival (November).
